East Point Police Uncover Counterfeit CD/DVD Operation

EAST POINT, GEORGIA (July 29, 2005) - - The East Point Police Department has uncovered a counterfeit CD/DVD Operation. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a report of possible counterfeit CDs and DVDs being sold at 2053 Stanton Road (Stanton Plaza T-shirt Boutique) in East Point, Georgia, Fulton County.

Following the filing of the report, East Point Police, RIAA agents, and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) agents began conducting undercover operations at the location. What they discovered was a business that fronted as a T-shirt shop, but conducted counterfeit CD and DVD operations in the rear of the store.

As a result of their findings, a search warrant was obtained, and on June 23, 2005, East Point Police, RIAA and MPAA agents converged on the location. Two subjects were arrested and charged with five counts each of felonious reproduction of recorded material. A total of 5, 739 counterfeit DVDs and 16,240 counterfeit CDs were seized. The seizure had an estimated real value of $385, 121. Other items seized were: a van used to transport the counterfeit CDs and DVDs, a video surveillance system, and products used to package, store, transport, and deliver counterfeit materials.

This case is the result of an ongoing collaboration between Metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies, the RIAA and the MPAA to protect the entertainment industry and consumers against the effects of fraudulent reproduction of recorded material.
